What is Garry's Mod?

Garry's Mod Store Page

Garry's Mod is a beloved physics sandbox game released in 2006 with a focus on user-created content. In the many years since its release, users have created a wide variety of content for the game that you can enjoy for free (not counting the cost of the game)! A world of fun and wacky adventures are a click away thanks to the Steam workshop integration.

Intro

The primary goal of this page is to provide instructions for joining the GMod event. Feel free to explore all the content GMod has available on your own!

Disclaimer & basic troubleshooting tips

GMod can be a very buggy game. There aren't many steps to get set up, but please follow the instructions closely! If you run into any issues that aren't described on this page and you're not sure what to do, here are some general steps you can take:

  1. Check the troubleshooting section of the wiki
  2. If your issue isn't listed on the troubleshooting section, reach out to LasagaKing on the MondoCat discord to describe your issue (DMs or ping, but pings might get missed). You may be able to resolve the issue together
  3. If the problem still persists, try using your search engine of choice to consult the internet
  4. If the internet doesn't provide an answer you may be out of luck. Hopefully it doesn't get to this point, but it's hard to predict what kinds of issues will pop up with an old game on a wide variety of hardware setups

If you find a solution to your problem, please reach out to LasagaKing to describe your issue and solution or add it to the troubleshooting section of the page yourself!!! This will help any future gamers who run into the same problems.

Quickstart Guide

Getting the required workshop mods

Navigate to the Workshop Collection page and login to Steam. Alternatively, you can search for the collection by name in the Garry's mod workshop collections page. Click the 'subscribe to all' button on the workshop page. This will download the mods that are in use on the server. Make sure you launch the game and allow the addons to install properly after you've subscribed to the collection. The collection may get updated, so please check that you have all the addons in the collection (or just navigate to the page and subscribe to all again) before joining!!!

You can check that your addons are installed by navigating to the 'addons' page in-game

Enabling the developer console

You will need to do this to join the server. In GMod, navigate to options -> keyboard -> advanced. Click on the 'advanced' button and check 'enable developer console'

Make sure to check the key that the console is bound to

Joining the server

When the event is ongoing, open up your developer console by pressing the assigned key (default: `/~ key on your keyboard). If the console does not open, try opening the options menu before pressing the console key on your keyboard

Paste the following command into your console and hit 'enter'

connect p2p:85568392928682289; password lasagamond

Congratulations! You should now be in the server!

Addendum: what is that scary connect command?

The server is running in peer to peer mode. The p2p signifies peer to peer networking and the following numbers make up a unique identifier to connect to the server with. The password is the password set on the server (so that people can't join without the password). A further discussion of networking schemes is beyond the scope of this wiki, but you can read up on it on wikipedia (Peer-to-peer) if you are curious
